Best 40 inch TV of 2015

By S21, 29 Sep 2015

We're doing things a bit differently this year. Instead of choosing a single best TV in each size category, we're picking a selection. Last year's winners were all from Samsung, and while the Korean company continues to be extremely popular, this year, the competition is much more balanced.

1. Samsung UE40JU6400

The Samsung UE40JU6400 is a very safe buy. It's the mid-range offering from the UK's most popular TV manufacturer, and it offers the latest UHD (4K) viewing. We could debate whether UHD is worth having at the 40-inch screen size, but when a TV this good is priced at around £550, it's an easy winner. The UE40JU6400 brings superb styling, pin-sharp images and Samsung's all-new Smart TV system into your home, and is the best Samsung TV at this size, unless you want to spend silly money. The only flaw is the narrow viewing angles available - sit off-centre and the colours begin to fade, a common fault in many LED TVs. If you want more, you might consider the more expensive Samsung UE40JU6740.

2. Panasonic TX-40CX700B

The price of the Panasonic TX-40CX700B UHD TV has dropped significantly since launch, and is now almost a match for the Samsung. Panasonic's super-bright screen really brings the picture to life, and it has much better viewing angles than the Samsung. It also has 3D capability, and we like its high-end looks too, with its ultraslim silver bezel and metal blade-style stand. The CX700B is exclusive to Currys / PC World, but the CX680B is available everywhere and is also a highly recommended TV.

3. Samsung UE43J5500

If you're hunting for a real bargain, you ought to take a look at the Samsung UE43J5500. While this isn't a UHD TV, we don't think that's a feature you'll greatly miss on a screen this size, and as compensation, the J5500 gives you a 43-inch screen for around the £400 mark, which has got to be a bargain. This is an entry-level TV from Samsung, so it won't deliver the fine picture quality of the JU6400, but it's good enough for family viewing, and comes with the same Smart TV functionality as Samsung's more expensive models, including a fast quadcore processor. You won't find a quality 43-inch Smart TV much cheaper than this.
