AEG L87696WD review

 Review: September 2015

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: The AEG L87696WD is a high-performance, high-capacity washer/dryer that costs twice as much as a low-end machine, but should repay the investment with years of reliable performance. It washes and dries efficiently and effectively, and is one of the very quietest machines you can buy. It's a smart-looking appliance too, that will look good in your kitchen or utility room, and it's one that we highly recommend.

The AEG L87696WD is a heavy-duty washer dryer with a generous capacity and plenty of high-end features. Weighing 81kg, it's heavier than many cheaper brand machines, and that bodes well for both reliability and sound-proofing.

The machine has a traditional design, with a modern twist. A large LCD screen on the control panel displays information about the programmes and options in use, and a metallic finish sets off the control panel and porthole, lending the machine a premium look.

The control panel is slightly sloping, making it comfortable to use, but well-suited for built-under installation. At first glance, the number of controls and buttons can seem a bit daunting, but they are all clearly labelled and laid out, and shouldn't pose any problems after the initial learning phase.

Washing and performance

The AEG L87696WD has a very large 9kg washing capacity, which is enough for very substantial family-sized loads, and can also handle 6kg of drying, which means that you won't have to worry about over-loading.

AEG's ProTex system aims to treat the wash load gently, adjusting to the load with its OptiSense automatic load sensor. It's Woolmark Blue (formerly known as Woolmark Gold) certified too. Performance will always be better with larger loads, but even with half loads, the machine washes and dries effectively.

There's a wide choice of wash programmes on offer, including Cotton, Synthetic, Delicates, Wool Plus and Easy Iron. In addition, you can select from a Prewash with stain action, Economy, Extra Rinse and Sensitive.

AEG's brushless inverter motor is incredibly quiet. In fact, AEG produces quite possibly the quietest washer dryers currently available. It's a very energy-efficient washer-dryer, rated A for efficiency, and has a fast 1600rpm spin speed, enabling it to remove more water before the drying phase, saving both time and electricity.

A delay start timer is available.

AEG has a reputation for solid reliability. The build quality of the appliance is apparent from its sturdy construction and finish, and inverter motors are much more reliable than conventional motors. The L87696WD ought to give years of reliable use, justifying its high price.

Conclusion - expensive but a top performer

The AEG L87696WD costs more than twice that of a cheap washer-dryer from a mass market manufacturer like Hotpoint/Indesit, but it justifies the extra cost through increased reliability and better performance.

Reliability isn't something that can be found on a spec sheet, but AEG has spent years building appliances that demonstrate reliability and durability, and we think this model will be one that lasts for years. It really is a best buy washer dryer.

Washing performance is something that also has to be experienced, and this is a machine that washes and dries very effectively, without treating your clothes roughly. It's also incredibly quiet in operation, and this is a key advantage if your machine is in your kitchen or an adjacent utility area.
